Our school provides inner-city "at-risk" youth with exciting opportunities to conduct fieldwork in one of the largest city parks in the nation. These students, many of whom have had few opportunities to spend time in nature, let alone do quality fieldwork in nature, mostly live in "the projects" or in group homes. All of the students are on probation and have experienced more than their share of violence and chaos. We must give students who have had less opportunity an equitable chance to be successful in college. In this project students are documenting the bio-diversity in one of our nation’s largest city parks. This type of fieldwork gives them a head start doing upper division college fieldwork. When they compare their fieldwork to those projects in higher education, they see they are capable of doing the same type of work that college students do. Therefore they are more likely to give college a try. The opportunity to spend quality time with plants and animals leads the students to a level of calm and focus that they rarely have felt. They have many questions about the wildlife they observe. The field guides will provide some immediate answers in the field. As students discover new living organisms, they need to identify and document as much information as possible. My students need field guides to help identify each member of the eco-system they are studying. The field guides include guides to mammals, birds, reptiles, amphibians, insects, and a variety of plants. You can make a big difference in the life of young people that have really not had a lot of opportunities, to get out into nature. Experience shows us that these types of activities have a huge impact on the motivation and sense of self-confidence of the students that participate in them. This can lead to a renewed sense of hope, and sense of purpose.
