Class Sets Of Chapter Books

My students need 30 copies of "Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry" and 20 copies of each of 5 other chapter books to use during our daily reading lessons. Most upper elementary students do not enjoy using the basal and prefer to read chapter books. My class sizes have increased dramatically over the past two years and I need more books to add to my collection so that each student can have his/her own book to read from in class. It is very difficult for students to have to share a book with another student.

I teach 55 4th and 5th graders reading and language arts at an inner-city school with over 90% minority and poverty populations. We are a magnet school that focuses on the contemporary arts. Our students incorporate drama, literature, and a love of reading into their visual arts and dance lessons.

Since most of my students come from an impoverished background they have few opportunities for reading and literature outside of school. Many of my students do not have any books at home and the only pleasure reading they do is here at school.

We need class sets of chapter books to supplant the reading text book. Many of the stories in the reading text are seen as "boring" to my students so they do not get excited about reading. I have found that using popular and meaningful chapter books opens up the world of literacy and literature to these students like the basal never could. Chapter books are more interesting and fun for the students to read and more relevant to real life. Most adults do not read basals for pleasure, but hopefully many of them read chapter books for enjoyment. I want to teach my students to love reading.

Reading is the most important life skill that a student can learn. If one does not know how to read it is going to be very difficult to be a successful member of society as an adult. I know that if I do not get my students hooked on reading before they leave me and go off to the middle school they will probably never learn to love reading like I would want them to. Chapter books are so much more fun for the students and they have such a greater impact on a student's perception of pleasure reading. I consider them to be an essential tool in the classroom for reading instruction.
