Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I teach Art I to 9th, 10th, 11th, and 12th graders. I have a high percentage of high-need and special education students and each of my classes is packed full with 30 to 35 students.

"We don't want to see old art." This is what my students told me one day while we were flipping through are classroom textbooks so I decided they needed to see something different. My students favorites are Claes Oldenburg and Bruce Gray. However, these artists are not featured in our books so I have to show them pictures from online.

With a laptop computer, I can access pictures online of new and modern art projects and project them onto my overhead screen in my classroom.

When I show students photos from online I have to have them stand around my desk and stare at my little screen, as you can imagine this is almost impossible to do but the students love to look at the different sculptures and paintings. These visuals somehow motivate the students to go back to their desk and create wonderful work.
