Forensics: More than Meets the Eye!

My students need an Inquiry Investigations Forensic Science Curriculum Module.

The school that I teach at is in rural Eastern Oregon. I am a 7-12 grade science teacher, in which I teach 7/8 Computer Science, 7/8 Science, 9/10 Biology, 11/12 Physics, 11/12 Personal Finance, 9-12 Anatomy and Independent Study (Chemistry and Physical Science will be offered next year). The school is a high poverty school in which 15.9 % of the county is unemployed. Most of the students in the school are on free or reduced meals. Many of these students will be the first in their family to attend college, let alone graduate high school.

The State of Oregon (Department of Education) has taken a 1.2 % budget reduction clear from the top (higher education) to the bottom (K-12 classrooms). This means that schools have had to make significant reductions in their budgets for the rest of the school year and also over the next two school years. The State of Oregon Department of Education has decided to increase the amount of science credits students need in order to graduate from 2.0 to 3.0. The 2.0 of the 3.0 credits required must be inquiry and lab based. In order for my students to be able to acquire the needed science credits to graduate, I am planning on offering a forensics course during the 2009-2010 school year. In order for this to occur, funding for equipment and materials outside of the school budget is needed!

This will allow my students to have a high tech opportunity to assist them in acquiring the additional science credit to graduate, but also assist them with meeting Oregon's essential skill set in the area of technology. This will allow my students to be on the cutting edge of science and the real world application of it (forensics).

Your help will ensure that my students will have the same opportunities that larger schools have in the metro area. This will also allow my students to be inspired to finish high school and then attend college in the future!
