I teach 7th grade language arts in a socioeconomically diverse Maine school district. Students in my classes come from five different mid-coast towns which range in character from coastal fishing to inland agricultural.

Our budget has no room for new books! I have been teaching this book for several years but have never had a full team set. Now other teachers are interested in teaching the book along with me. We just don't have enough copies for each student and do not have the money to purchase them. "The Other Side Of The Sky" is Farah Ahmedi's true story of her life in and escape from Afghanistan. We use the book as vehicle for the study of literary conflict and a regional study of the Middle East.

Having enough books for a one book per student ratio will drastically improve this educational experience. It will make differentiation much easier, allowing students to have an individualized experience as they explore a part of the world vastly different than our own. Further, having a book per student removes any restraints on the planning and collaboration of teachers. We will no longer have to base instruction on availability of materials.

By funding this project you will enable students to engage in an incredible educational experience which will meet their individual needs and introduce them to a whole new world.
