I teach at an inner-city school where most of my students have been convicted of a crime, can't read at the high school level, have special needs, are on free or reduced priced lunch, have serious behavioral and emotional problems, and are students that most schools don't want. But, I have never met so many high school students that once you catch their attention, they crave to learn something from you and want to better themselves.

I teach 10th graders right now and most of them don't know how to use Microsoft Word, send an e-mail, or use any other software programs. I want a computer for my classroom so that I can assign them papers that require typing and teach them how to use technology that they should have known their whole lives, but don't because computers are not a necessary expense in a lot of their homes.

This computer will be able to be a place for students to learn how to type, type well, write well, e-mail appropriately, and a tool for them to use Excel, PowerPoint, and other textbook software programs that will expand their minds. Most of my students don't understand computers and I strive to them how important it is to push themselves to be academic and thinkers. But, if we don't have the necessary tools to give them a fair chance against a teenager who comes from a privileged background, then we're not really helping them to overcome their life hurdles due to poverty.

Please help me to teach my students that they are worth the cost of a computer and that they can be successful after high school because they will learn such vital technological skills that are so necessary in today's world. They don't know how to use computers, but if together, you and I, can give them this skill and these tools then they do have a fighting chance to remove themselves from poverty and the life they currently know.
