A Class Library Face Lift

My students need a selection of 31 high-interest books for teenagers.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

Disbelief. Shock. Sympathy. Those are the reactions I am given when I tell others that I teach 7th grade reading to students in an urban public school. Most people see this age group as outrageous, rebellious, and annoying.

It is precisely because of the energy level and self-searching that make me enjoy teaching this grade level so much. Middle school students are in search of their beliefs and values. It is a critical age as they explore who they are and what path they want to go down. They are constantly seeking approval from their peers and adults while challenging and testing us.

My own early adolescence was not easy either, and that is why I have found this age to be particularly satisfying to teach. When I was in 7th grade, I was concerned about the opposite sex, my appearance, and my own dysfunctional family while facing peer pressure on a daily basis. I relive these difficult times through my own students and when they come to me with a problem, I often direct them to a particular book that I believe will guide them. The authors who made me realize that I was "normal" helped me immensely. This is why I would like to expand my classroom library with books that appeal to boys and girls dealing with problems such as fitting in, dating, and body issues.

Your help will allow me to enhance our classroom library with thirty-one carefully selected books that address a myriad of teen issues. When I am able to make going through adolescence easier for a child, then all of the difficulties associated with teaching this age are well worth while. Your help will allow me to enhance our classroom library with thirty-one carefully selected books that address a myriad of teen issues.
