Ms. Ward from Poughkeepsie NY is requesting technology through DonorsChoose, the most trusted classroom funding site for teachers.
My students need a computer projector.
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My students have great big ideas, and I want to give them a great big venue in which to share them. I am an English and Journalism teacher in an inner-city high school in New York. We are a high-poverty district with a very tight budget; at the moment my department cannot afford to provide enough literature books for every student, let alone add new technology to the classroom.
In the age of dry-erase surfaces and SmartBoards, I am still muddling along with an old green-slate chalkboard and an overhead projector (which until recently I had to project onto the window shade for lack of a screen). Fortunately, I do have a few computers in the room, and I am eager to incorporate technology into my teaching and into the students' skill-sets. The problem is that, without some way of projecting the computer screen onto a larger surface, it is nearly impossible to create an effective lesson plan using software even as commonplace as PowerPoint. Our district obtained a few LCD projectors several years ago, but those were distributed to the math and science departments exclusively.
I am very eager to bring an LCD projector into my classroom. I want to be able to present my lessons in a greater variety of media, and I want to be able to teach my students how to create their own presentations. I want them to be able to express their ideas with the great, big impact that can come with the visual medium. This is a skill that will not only excite them as students but also add value to their resumes as workers. Certainly my college-bound students should be well-versed in the technology that can help them communicate their ideas clearly and effectively.
I am already envisioning the eager expressions on my students' faces when they get the opportunity to explore this technology in my English and Journalism classes. You have the power to make that vision real; with your donation, you can help my students get excited about the next big project. Thank you.
