Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I teach 2nd grade at a rural school in a small town. We are in our 2nd year of School Improvement because many of our subgroups out of our 950 students have not met AYP. Our school has a variety of children consisting of 42% white, 46% Hispanic, 10% black, and 2% other. Over 60% of our students receive free or reduced lunch. My class of about 50% Hispanic is in great need of some buddy phones that I have designed using PVC pipe.

Every week I have my students buddy read their reading story. During buddy reading, each student is paired with another student around the same reading level as they are. The students sit ear to ear and take turns reading their story out loud. The rule for buddy reading is to use our 1 inch voice, which is a whisper. When 20 plus students are "whispering" and trying to hear their partner read, our 1 inch voice grows into a 3 inch voice. We consider a 3 inch voice to be our regular speaking voice. Every time, I have students complaining that they can't hear their partner either because others are so loud or their partner is speaking so softly trying to stay within the 1 inch voice range.

I have come up with a way that my students can buddy read with their partner and not be disturbed by the other groups in class. I took the design of the Whisper Phone and developed a buddy phone. Using PVC pipe, I connected two phones made of PVC pipe to each other with a straight pipe. This enables the students to whisper into one phone and the other person can hear them clearly at the other phone. Using the phones would decrease the noise level in the classroom allowing my students to get the optimum benefit from this activity as they enjoy reading together.

Your help will make it possible for my students to gain skills and confidence in their reading abilities as they improve their self-esteem and enhance their interpersonal and interaction skills. For my English as a Second Language students, buddy reading gives them the chance to participate in a class activity that provides a context for increasing oral language skills while at the same time engages them in meaningful literacy tasks.
