Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I teach art in a unique, public, but small K-12 school in a town with a population of less than 1000. Last year, we were the first school in the state to start a billiards club. This year, along with the help of the Academic Billiards Collective, we assisted 3 other high schools start billiards clubs which we compete with weekly. These clubs motivate many of our students to keep their grades up and for some it's just enough motivation for them to stay in school at all. Here, our teachers understand the value of using the billiards program for teaching math and physics lessons in a real world setting.

Being one of the smallest schools in this part of Nevada, we are often short changed when it comes to district and state funding. But, our students have begun to score higher on national standardized tests, so the billiards program has turned some eyes in our direction to see what we'll do next with it. This is where you come in. Until we can prove that the program is a big portion of why students may be doing better on scores, we are in an intermediary stage of program survival.

My students want to prove to themselves that in this digital age you don't have to live in a large city to change the world. They want to showcase our billiards program by creating computer-animated short films about our players that hype the clubs in order to recruit more schools to compete against next year. We also see the value of the job training potential by learning computer animation. The software and technology is present and, through programs like DonorsChoose.org, finally affordable. We want to show that students, even in this isolated town, can produce quality CG animation for the marketplace and at the same time bolster an educationally beneficial program.

I truly believe that if everyone did what they could to change the world in their small part of it, as much as my students want to, the cumulative effect would begin to shift global momentum. I believe it's possible, my students want to believe it and since you're on this web site, I know you want to go beyond believing and begin testing that theory right now.
