Our school is committed to raising our literacy scores with participation from all core areas. I teach integrated science classes to 8th graders in a rural Arkansas community. We have a high free and reduced lunch population. Our resources are very limited for classroom supplies and science lab supplies.

Due to these limited resources, I don't get to incorporate much outside of the basic curriculum. I work a lot in dispelling misconceptions in science classes. My students get to read non-fiction texts and articles related to science, but not much fiction. I would like to introduce a fiction book that we can read together. We could then look at dispelling any myths or verifying any facts presented by the book.

I would like to use "Life As We Knew It" by Susan Beth Pfeffer to my classes. This book's premise is that the moon has been hit by a meteor and is knocked closer to Earth. This results in dramatic changes on our planet. We would read and discuss the various events in the text. Students could research the events presented in the book. Involving both science and literacy, they would increase their fluency skills and analyze the validity of the text.

Helping bring this set of texts to my classroom will enable me to help produce literate, analytical thinkers. Students will be able to enter high school and the real world more fluent and more likely to question and verify the "facts" they confront on a daily basis.
