Imagine having a learning disability in a high school classroom. You struggle with math or reading or sometimes both. You are worked so hard in school that despite your disability you are in inclusion classes participating in the general education curriculum. An inclusion class is a regular education classroom that has a mix of regular education students and special education students. In addition to the regular education teacher there is also a certified special education teacher to assist in teaching. Your district has started using technology in every class and you are required to work on projects, save your progress, and continue working next class. The problem is the system only works is you correctly know your username and password, which even when you know that, it does not always work. So often times you'll borrow a friends flashdrive and hope that they are there next class period. Really what you you need is a flashdrive! As a teacher I only have so much money in my budget to buy resources. I teach three classes and am an inclusion teacher for three other classes. The majority of my budget is applied to my resource class. I wish that I could apply my budget to both types of class setting; however, it is unrealistic with the huge budget cuts that are in effect. The special education students within an inclusion setting work at least twice as hard as a regular education student due to their disability. The students on my caseload are earning successful grades within the regular education curriculum; however, are experiencing stressful times with the technology wave that has been introduced into our classes. The biggest frustration (which leads to shutdowns primarily) is saving their work. The special education students are working their best to openly embrace the technology and new tools; however, get aggravated when they save their projects and then it is not there when they return the next class period because it cannot be saved on the district server or if a student saves it on another student flashdrive it often gets lost. I have informed all of the parents of my special education students the need for an individual flashdrive. Many parents agree but have stated that it is more important to spend that money on a necessity rather than a flashdrive bought for school. It is hard to stress the importance when parents are struggling to pay bills. My students needs five flashdrives so they can fully function successfully within the general education curriculum. The five flashdrives would be used for each section of inclusion classes that I work with. The flashdrives will reduce frustration, anxiety, and shutdowns while increasing comprehension of classroom materials and completion rates of projects.
