Literacy Matters: Book Bin Storage

My students need 2 mobile book carts.

Responsible, respectful, organized pre-teens? You bet! My 5th grade students are enjoying our new classroom library, but have expressed concern about the long term health of our books. Why do they care so much about the health of our brand new books? Pride. My students are proud of their new classroom library. They are proud to have new books, and proud to see how nice they can keep them while we use them each day. I teach in a Title One school, which is a high poverty school area. We have a large Hispanic influence, and over 70% of my children participate in the free/reduced breakfast/lunch program.

Currently, our new classroom library is organized in tubs by topic. The tubs are sitting on the floor under the board. This set up makes it difficult for the children to browse the titles and book covers. We can not display the colorful book covers, as we have no shelving.

My ravenous readers would certainly benefit from having their beloved books displayed on a cart so they can easily access them. They like to flip through the covers, searching for that "just right" next read; the adventure they are searching for. The book storage cart is just the ticket for keeping our brand new books looking NEW.

Please help us bring our book bins off the floor and into the hands of the children by granting us the funds needed to purchase our book cart.
