Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My classroom is a kindergarten English language development classroom in a low-income area. My students are all English language learners, and the majority of them begin the school year with little to no English.

Although my students are eager to learn English, they face many challenges. This is the first year for English language development classrooms in our state, and due to budget cuts, the program is severely underfunded. We are currently using the same materials that were used in previous years, and these materials are intended for native English speakers. My students lack the understanding of English to comprehend many of the stories in the reading series. They struggle to build phonemic awareness skills necessary for early reading development because they do not have sufficient English vocabulary or mastery of English sounds. Although I do my best to expand their English vocabulary in a variety of ways, they still lack the needed resources to grow in their acquisition of the English language.

An excellent way to build their English vocabulary would be to provide them with a variety of listening, speaking, writing, and reading activities that include picture support. These materials will help to expand their vocabulary, enhancing their acquisition of the English language. The materials can be used in a whole group or independent setting and will expose students to an unlimited number of English vocabulary words. Materials include picture/word bingo, vocabulary centers that require children to categorize vocabulary words with pictures, daily English question prompts, and vocabulary picture cards.

Your thoughtfulness and generosity will provide my English language learners with the extra support they need to access the curriculum that is intended for native English speakers. Without your support, they will struggle to acquire the English necessary for success in school and life in the United States.
