I am the school counselor at a Title I elementary school in rural North Carolina. Our school has a very diverse ethnic background as well as an impoverished community lacking in local resources. I am working in conjunction with our four-second grade teachers to reach out to EVERY second grade student through this grant, including our ESL (English as a Second Language) and EC (Special Education) population.

As school counselor, my goal is to see each of my students graduate from high school. This is a high expectation for many of my students as they would be the first to graduate in their family. My goal is to meet the social/emotional needs of the children without neglecting their academic needs as well. I've found that many of my students "hate to read." My goal through this grant is to obtain a class set of Junie B. Jones books to read with each of the 2nd grade homerooms to show them that reading is fun! I am collaborating with the homeroom teachers as well as the librarian to emphasize to students that reading is a skill that can be used for enjoyment.

"I hate reading!" - What a horrible thing to hear a child say! As a community we need to show our students that reading is fun and enjoyable. I am asking for sets of Junie B. Jones books to read with second grade students. My dream is to obtain enough books for each child to hold a book and read along as an adult reads to the students. To show the students that reading is fun, I am collaborating with the media specialist and the second grade teachers in order to provide a variety of guest readers for each book. Through reading books with a variety of adults and parent volunteers’ students will learn that reading can be fun... and they will no longer say, "I hate reading!"

Did you hate reading when you were a child? I did. What made the difference for me, what changed my mind about reading was that my father spent quality time with me and read to me. When I was a child my dad read the entire Nancy Drew series to me. I didn't know that reading could be fun or enjoyable until he sat me on his lap and I read along with him. My students need caring adults to read with them. My students need to see that reading can be fun and enjoyable. Through your donation you will enable my students to hold the book and read along as a variety of adult role models read to them and show them how reading can me fun. Please help me change the attitude of my students, together we can instill a new way of thinking, "I love reading!"
