Bringing other cultures to life! I teach Eastern Hemisphere Social Studies to 118 sixth graders. Our area has a high number of low income families, as well as many upper management workers who have lost their jobs. We use full inclusion, so all students are in the class together, regardless of severity of need.

Our students to not have the exposure to other cultures that many in other areas do. We do have internet access at the school and I recently borrowed a mimio to explain some historical maps and show pictures from the African culture we are studying. The students loved it! I was able to encourage more discussion than we've had lately. I was also able to print off the maps that we discussed for the students who were absent. However, borrowing this technology cannot happen very often as it is in almost constant demand. (I've waited more than 3 months to use it for this lesson)

It can be difficult to inspire 11 year-olds to care about the history and geography of other countries. However, visuals can be very powerful in capturing attention and inspiring discussion. I would like a mimio for our room. There are so many things I can do with this--showing maps, labeling as a class and then printing, saving the complete presentation for those absent, showing anything from the internet life-size, creating timelines together as class, showing samples of student work...the possibilities are endless! This technology will also provide resources available on the internet that I currently have no way of using with the entire class at one time.

After using the borrowed mimio, my students came in the door the next day begging me to show them more "cool maps!" That doesn't happen often, but I hope you will enable it to continue!
