"I teach PE and Health in the inner city in Illinois at a public school. The poverty rate is quite high at around 97%. The school is mostly Hispanic with grades Pre K through 5.
We do not have the fitness equipment that suburban schools have. I think the students do have an interest in fitness, and their self esteem would be enhanced by being in better shape. I think this is especially true for the girls.
Most of the kids do not have fitness equipment at home, so their only exercise may be at school.
I would need 20 mats for yoga and stretching, and arm weights to enhance the fitness program. I could use the equipment for both PE class and for an after school fitness class for girls. I think the girls would be less intimidated if they were able to work out and get in shape. It would really help their self esteem.
Your help would ensure that girls in a poverty stricken neighborhood, would be able to participate in an after school fitness class to help them feel better about themselves. So many kids today are out of shape, which contributes to self esteem issues.
My students need 20 yoga mats and an assortment of 2-4 lb. hand weights.
The cost of this proposal is $1,084, which includes shipping for any materials requested and fulfillment ."
I just wanted to express my appreciation for the yoga mats and hand weights that you donated to our school. I had an after school group of girls and we worked on fitness and self esteem. They loved the new equipment. I even used it in some of my PE classes and the kids were so excited. They especially loved the weights and would practice flexing their muscles after they used them for a while.
Our school, like many, is facing budget cuts and there is no money for the "fun things". People like you, make it possible for educators to expand programs in ways they otherwise could not afford to.
Thanks you for supporting what I do!
With gratitude, Mrs. M.
Mrs. M. sent this note after the project was fully funded:
Thank you so much for making donations to my "Self Esteem for Girls Through Fitness" Project. I presently have 20 girls in my after school class and they were so happy when I told them about this. We are presently sharing weights, as I only have a few. We were using old tumbling mats for yoga. Now they can each use their own weights, and will have nice new mats to use. They must have asked me ten times, "When will the stuff be here?" I can't wait to share the pictures with all of you later so you can see the joy you brought to their faces!
Reviewed the project essay and sent follow-up questions if needed.

"I gave to this project because physical well-being is empowering, and it's so important for girls to have positive body images. And yoga is hopefully a practice in which the girls can participate for a long time to come, whether at home on their own, or as a part of a group!

"I gave to this project because...I was very involved as athletics from grade school through college and I want to make sure that other young girls have the same opportunities for fitness and athletics. It helps to improve young girls' self esteem and body image for a lifetime if healthy habits are established at a young age."

"I gave to this project because...
This proposal spoke to me over all others as achieving the goal is priceless. Girls need to learn to love themselves at an early age and I believe that if I had that type of an opportuinity I may be much more confident today. I hope that enough money is raised to enable this program."
