The Art of Reading!

My students need a wonderful set of 26 art books, including a number of biographies.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I am a full time art teacher at a low income elementary school in Southern California. Most of my students are high poverty, limited English speaking students who are struggling readers and writers, but also love art. Most of my students have very limited knowledge about art.

I strongly believe that all students, regardless of ability or income level, deserve quality art instruction. As most teachers know, there is never enough time in the day to teach everything that needs to be taught. As such, art is often pushed to the side and reading and writing takes precedence. In fact, many teachers feel that art is simply for enrichment, and therefore is often left out of the curriculum. But the exact opposite is true. Research often suggests that students who engage in a well rounded art education, actually increase their test scores in reading and math. Also, students who know they will get to learn about or create art are more motivated to come to school and pay attention!

My solution to this dilemma is to teach reading and art at the same time! Our school is working very hard to raise our language arts test scores and I don't want to take away from my students' reading time. Therefore I am asking for a set of 26 fiction and non fiction art books. These books are all about art, and yet are readable by all students. Some of the books inspire children to create art such as, "Dot" and "The Art Lesson" while others are simply about the famous artists such as "Van Gogh's Sunflowers".

All teachers need books and I need art books! It is just not fair to take the arts away from struggling students. All children deserve to learn about art and creativity regardless of their academic or economic level. I understand how important reading is, and I truly think that if my classroom library had a larger supply of art books that my students could actually read or I could read aloud; I would be meeting both goals of teaching reading and teaching art! Please help my students gain access to amazing world of art and learn about famous artists!
