Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

We want the world at our fingertips! My students live in a low-income, high-risk area in an urban environment. However, at my school, we reduce their risk and provide a rich education for children who may never make it through high school. A dual-language charter school, we teach our students through their culture and their language, providing them with hope for the future and a plethora of opportunities.

We need your help to bring their world into their classroom. Most of my students never have the chance to leave their own neighborhoods. Many of them cannot even tell you what the rest of their state of Pennsylvania looks like, much less the rest of the nation. Yet they want to know what else is out there, what else is just beyond their fingertips, what else seems beyond their grasp.

YOU can make this happen. Through the simple technology of a television/dvd player and cart, you can bring the world into their classroom. Instead of just hearing about China, California or Canada, my students could watch a movie about those far away places and virtually experience them within the safety of their own classroom. In an hour and half, these hard-working children could take a trip to a foreign country and virtually experience those locations themselves, instead of just looking at still, lifeless pictures in a book.

YOU can make a difference in the lives of 40 5th grade students. YOU can give them hope that there is something else out there for them instead of gangs, guns and graffiti. Purchasing them a tv and dvd combo will help them dream...help them hope...help them dare. Please reach out to these wonderful kids and show them that the world isn't beyond their fingertips and really is within their grasp.
