Increase Teen Reading Through Popular Request Novels Part 1

My students need 45 popular books, including works by Darren Shan, Lurlene McDaniel and Ann Brashares.

I am the library media specialist in a rural high school. We are implementing the Accelerated Reader program to help improve our students' reading comprehension. Our students read a lot of fiction books but we encourage students to read non-fiction. Many of our teachers allow our students to read A.R. books in the areas of Math, Technology, Science, and History for extra credit. Our mutually held belief is that a student that can comprehend a non-fiction book can comprehend a textbook. We push reading comprehension to help our students improve their scores on the state English multiple choice test that includes reading. Our reading comprehension program helps our students score better on the reading portion of the ACT. Students with strong reading skills will have success in post-secondary educational settings.

Our students are in need of additional library books for several reasons. Our high school library is their primary source especially for fiction books. The local public library has struggled with leaks in the roof which has caused an excessive black mold problem. The closest bookstore that stocks fiction is a 40 minute drive to an adjacent county. Many of our students rarely leave our county. Reading is the way a lot of our students explore life outside our county.

The books I am requesting are copies of titles that stay on my reserve list in the library. Many of these books have up to eight students waiting to read a specific title. When I came to my school ten years ago new fiction titles hadn't been purchased in over 20 years. I've spent the last 10 years rebuilding our collection through library budget money, grants, and donations. I initiated the use of Accelerated Reader software to increase our students' reading comprehension skills. Our library circulation has double and tripled since implementing this program. The newest short term goal is to see circulation quadruple by providing additional copies of books students love to read.

Your help will give my students ready access to books they are requesting. Additional access will help increase our library circulation and provide more opportunities for students' reading practice. Studies have shown that the more students engage in reading practice the higher their reading comprehension levels rise.
