I teach in a rural community in central North Carolina. Our school is striving to improve reading comprehension and fluency.

To Kill A Mockingbird is a classic text that challenges students to think about how they view themselves and those around them. It is also academically challenging to read for my eighth graders. I teach EC inclusion and many of my students would find it intimidating to read the version of To Kill A Mockingbird to which we have access. The print is smaller and the structure of the text appears to be more challenging.

I previously had access to two versions of To Kill A Mockingbird; the one I have access to now and the one I have requested. Given a choice, my students preferred the version I have requested. The cover art is more appealing to my students and the larger print makes it physically easier to read and makes it appear "easier" academically. I feel this version of the book would appeal to my students without intimidating them. We all know you should not judge a book by its cover but many students do.

You can help my students access the GREAT literary work To Kill A Mockingbird. This grant will help my students engage with a work of art without intimidating them.
