Fish are Friends...NOT Food

My students need fish and snails to fill our aquarium. We also need a number of books to read about fish and other marine animals.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

We are in the desert! There are 24 of us in a cramped portable and we will use our fish tank as an outlet to the coastal world we can't get to. My students are in an economically depressed area and have never owned or really seen live fish before. This would be a great opportunity to expand their views.

My students live where there is less than 8 inches of rain each year. We have no rivers or lakes nearby. The ocean is a 5 hour drive away. We have no real aquarium to speak of. The only fish my students are exposed to are what they see in the supermarket. We want to broaden our horizons and see new forms of life.

The resources we need are very simple, fish and books. We have an empty aquarium ready to be filled with our little aquatic friends. Our library is ready to be filled with great books to compliment our fish. Our minds are ready to be filled with wonderful experiences.

Not only will you be exposing children in the desert to marine life, you will be broadening their interests. They will become better readers because they will be interested in the books to learn more about the fish we have. This grant really does make a difference because otherwise my students would never have this type of exposure.
