Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I teach in a high-poverty area of California. My students are all intensive and struggling learners who are in my reading/writing support courses in order to enhance their English and communication skills.

Our lab recently informed us that the school-wide server is no longer operable. There is no money to fix it and our students do not have enough money to buy storage devices themselves. We work on long-term projects and students often go back to work on projects that have been deleted. It is understandably frustrating for them to have to start from scratch.

I am asking for a set of 80 flash drives so students can always have access to their projects. Students can create year-long digital portfolios in which to keep their files without the fear of losing their work. At the end of each year, students can save the whole portfolio to other media or choose to email files to themselves each time they receive final grades on projects. This way, the students have safely secured all of their work and, as an added bonus, the teacher can take home a collection of flash drives instead of stacks of papers, digitalizing comments. It not only introduces more technology to our students, it is also eco-friendly.
