Learning How the World Works

My students need sand molds, plant and insect specimens, prisms, a tornado tube, and a recycling game.

Welcome to our bilingual pre-k classroom! My children love learning about science and I ensure they have access to the most life-like objects and materials I can provide. In my state children qualify by income for public pre-k, so all 22 of my children are on free or reduced lunch. My class is made up of English language learners as well as children with identified special needs.

Children learn through touching, hearing, smelling, and talking. Science is a subject that lends itself to investigation and discussion, and this is what I do every day in my classroom. Four and five year olds revel in the mysteries and wonders of nature, and there are amazing materials created to capitalize on this curiosity and turn it into teachable moments.

Science has been getting a lot of attention lately because we are finding our children often lack in this subject, especially children from backgrounds of poverty. In my classroom, I work to alleviate this gap by giving them the best materials and opportunities available. Carefully created insect and plant specimens will show them the intricate parts of both while also being sturdy enough to hold up to excited small hands. A tornado tube will teach them how this weather phenomenon works. Various sand molds work to not only help children learn the properties of matter but also to master literacy skills such as letter and number recognition. A great recycling game will help explain the process and importance to them, and get them excited about recycling in their own homes.

By providing these materials you will be showing children how the world works, both this year and for years to come. Access to these items will give my students the boost they need to succeed academically and bridge the gap that keeps getting bigger and bigger between them and their higher-income peers. And who knows, you may one day see one of these children sharing their cutting-edge scientific discovery!
