"I teach 5th grade to a wonderful group of students. In science, the students learn about plate tectonics, the rock cycle and animal habitats, all through the ocean.
Getting students excited about learning is something I strive to do everyday. My students are extremely visual and learn through seeing as well as touching. By having the ocean come to life in the classroom, students will not only be more willing to learn, but also excited to do so.
I would like supplies to create an underwater like atmosphere in my classroom. Students will be able to sit in the "Coral Reef", on our ocean rug and read a book, or sit on the "Continental Shelf" and work on math problems. This way students can learn about and be immersed in the ocean, even while other subjects are being taught! By surrounding students by a vital subject taught in 5th grade, these materials will help the students become interested and learn more about the ocean and our world.
You will make it possible for my students to become lifelong learners. By teaching them that learning can be fun, you are giving them the foundation to gain more knowledge, throughout their school career and life.
My Ocean unit needs 15 resources, including a set of ocean drums, cut-outs, bulletin board materials, stickers, books, a Sea Hunt carpet and a treasure chest.

Dear Rosemary, Barbara, Don & Rosemary McFadden and Theresa,
Well, my classroom is now an official underwater ocean! The students love it. After everything came and we put it around the room, I asked the kids if they think I went overboard. In true kid fashion they said "No Way". The problem is I can't think of another place to put ocean stuff!
Their favorite thing would have to be the ocean rug in the reading corner. The kids get so excited to sit on it and read their books, I had to make a schedule so they would each get a fair amount of time there! Another thing they love is the sea creatures hanging from the ceilings. They have started naming them and asking if they can sit under Homer, instead of Bubbles.
I've noticed that this year they have started reading about the oceans on their own. They check out books from the library on oceans, and are constantly coming to tell me fun new facts they have learned. By having the classroom decorated in an ocean theme, my students have a new found love and interest of the ocean. Thank you for helping me make my dream come true!
With gratitude, Ms. M.

Dear Rosemary, Barbara, Don & Rosemary McFadden and Theresa,
Thank you so much for helping me with this project. I am extremely excited to use these materials in my classroom this school year, and in the years to come. It is wonderful to have support from caring people like you. As the materials come in, the students and I will create an underwater classroom. This will help them become immersed in the curriculum and will hopefully become even more excited about learning! Thank you for contributing to this project.
Reviewed the project essay and sent follow-up questions if needed.
