I teach fourth and fifth grade students in a self-contained highly capable program. My students are extremely intelligent (top 3%)and motivated to learn.

I am concerned that the cultural diversity in both our elementary school and our town in limited. I want my students to learn about what life is like in other cultures/countries and to not only appreciate/understand the world's diversity, but also be a part of the solution to world issues (poverty, education and health).

I have carefully selected children's books that focus on culture and global issues. They are all highly recommended and appropriate for upper elementary students. I plan to use these materials as part of a six week social studies unit I teach. These materials will be used to spark discussion and inquiry in my classroom.

With your help, my highly capable students will expand their understanding of people and cultures. Perhaps it will also inspire them to use their minds to solve world issues.
