Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I am the brand new music teacher at a K-14 charter school in Indiana that serves a very at-risk population. We are 98% African-American and several of our students will be the first in their family to graduate high school or attend college. Due to the current economic situation, our small size, and limited funding, our budget is very tight.

Although I inherited instruments from the previous music program, my music classroom did not come equipped with a music staff or white board. I would like to purchase a music staff to help my students as we learn new instruments, music, and begin to create our own musical compositions. It is difficult to teach without a permanent music staff because when I draw a music staff with a dry erase marker, the staff is damaged or disappears as I change the notes.

I would like to start off by purchasing this flexible music staff to use as I build interest in my music program and demonstrate a permanent need for a larger board in years to come. Because our school budget is very tight and was set before I obtained this position, there is not a lot of wiggle room. My students have already expressed a great interest in creating and recording their own music and the purchase of a permanent music staff will best help me to show them music foundations and chord progressions that they can incorporate in their own musical compositions.

Music is a universal language that reaches into the depths of every soul. We celebrate with music, we're empowered by music, we express ourselves through music, and we turn to music at our greatest times of need. This is one of the those times of need. Your donation can help my at-risk students embrace and discover music talent and a source of expression that speaks more than any language or words ever could. Your donation could help my students find a motivation to keep them in the classroom and off of the streets.
