Y2K9: Dr. Seuss Podcasts and Moore

My students need 4 Sansa MP3 players, a Dr. Seuss goal bulletin board kit, and glitter star stickers to put on the goal chart to mark books read.

In the year 2009 there is a need for teachers to integrate technology in creative ways to present materials to our students. I am a kindergarten teacher and I teach my students language arts, math, science, health and social studies. My school has over an 80% low income population.

The students in my class come from very different backgrounds. Although they are all familiar with MP3 players, not all of them own them. My students are very interested in the one that I own and are very eager to listen to podcasts when I load them specifically for them.

In order for me to complete this project I will need MP3 players, a goal chart and stickers to place on the goal chart. Kindergarten has changed so much over the years and students are expected to be able to read by the end of this year. I think that Dr. Seuss books have been a great resource that I have used over the years that I have been teaching. This project will allow me to help my students spark a love for reading by using some of our favorite books. I will record directly onto the MP3 players and I can let some students record as well. Because of size and portability students will be able to check them out throughout the day and during our literacy centers. Now, I could just download podcasts that have already been made, but by recording my own voice I am able to remind students of some specific good reading practices. I would like to remind them through the podcasts about who the author and illustrator are. Also I can tell them that all books are read from left to right, top to bottom. These key reading skills are assessed on their kindergarten report cards and this would be a great way for me to help them remember.

These tools can be used for years to come to create students that are enthusiastic and successful readers.
