Take Home Hands-On Experiments On the Go

My students need blank cassette tapes, take home hanger bags, tweezers, a magnifying glass, liquid Gatorade, solid snacks, air fresheners, site word flash cards, and fruit mix to take home hands-on science experiments.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I teach fifth grade Science to a variety of learners, including sixteen Special Needs students in a low-income community.

We know that students learn when they get to do hands-on experiments and get to see how to do something. For instance, when teaching someone how to ride a bike we wouldn't stand in front of the class, lecture them, have them write the definition of it, and have them write about it in a sentence. We would let them get on and go, while still carefully guiding them. This project has the same goal. I want to record instructions, provide the book and lesson, then add a little hands on Science experiment to each little Science bag, and have students take turns taking these projects home with them to do with a parent.

I need the tapes, bags, and healthy snacks to send home with students in order to really have fun with this project. The lessons are state standards, but the experiments with edible healthy snacks can teach students all about things like states of matter in dealing with solids, liquids, and gases. They will have opportunities to learn the difference between mixtures and solutions as they take apart M&Ms, observe them through a magnifying glass, determine their classification, then get to eat them too! Students will be absorbed in learning while they have fun too.

They cannot ride the bike if they only hear about it being done and understand the definition. The same goes for many of these Science concepts I want to teach. Students need time to explore and have fun with learning. I cannot provide these extra moments for them in the classroom because I have too many students and not enough time or money to buy this fun stuff. However, students can learn many of the same objectives I need to teach through "playing" with these experiments on their home time instead of being in front of a game or TV. They will learn the objectives because learning this way is fun, and there's something in it for them. If funding is provided, my students will get the best of me everyday in the classroom, but can take home lessons I have taped and aligned with the curriculum and top it off with a great experiment at their own homes at night.
