Mr. M. J.F. Webb High School
Oxford, NC Grades 9-12

The WebbTV project is designed to integrate technology into the six different 9th grade World History and 11th grade United States History courses I teach each year. The students involved in this project are a very diverse group of learners. Half are economically underprivileged. Half are also African American or Latino. A wide range of academic levels are also represented. Approximately one-third of the students are taking courses at the Honors level while the remainder of students are completing work at the regular Academic level.

Social studies can be a very dry and uninteresting subject. Additionally, many of the students I work with have extremely limited access to technology. I aim to develop a more engaging instructional routine and to promote 21st Century workforce skills by integrating technology into the social studies curriculum through this WebbTV project.

Students will use the flip video cameras acquired in this project to develop a variety of video programs. For example, while studying the development of the two-party system in US History, students will reenact and produce era specific campaign ads. World History students will also research and develop global awareness documentaries which examine modern issues like immigration trends, environmental issues, and globalization. Students will also gather and archive local oral histories.

My goal is to have students working directly with technology as much as possible because I feel that such a format is more engaging for most learners. Additionally, I believe that a high tech instructional routine is also beneficial because such a format helps students acquire the computer literacy skills they need to operate successfully in the 21st Century economy. Your help in funding this WebbTV project will, consequently, be greatly appreciated.
