I teach in an inner-city middle school. My students are extremely diverse. Most are free or reduced lunch and most of them have never experienced the great outdoors. I teach science, reading and language arts and try my best to introduce students to the world outside of the city, as well as point out the wonderful world within their city that they take for granted. Many of my students have special needs and are included with the general population and receive no additional support in my classroom. I have a large number of students who have been in trouble with the law with regular probation officers, social workers, court officers, etc. as well as students who have witnessed or been a victim of drive by shootings, domestic violence, sexual harassment, etc.

My students always ask if they can come home with me, go camping with my family, or go geocaching with us. They are interested in the outdoors and they are interested in learning something new. My students love technology and using the computer lab, which would give us coordinates to discover around us. After a geocache hunt my students would be responsible for logging their experience on-line, which would reinforce their writing skills.

I believe that using the GPS units to get my students outside during the school day or creating an after-school club to keep my kids off the streets will have a huge impact. We have a computer lab in our building but we do not have hand held GPS units. It would be ideal to have a GPS unit for each group of 3-4 students in a class size of 36.

Your help will make it possible for my students to get out of their seats and experience the great outdoors. I believe that it will get kids off the streets, which means keeping them out of trouble.
