Sharp Minds Need Sharp Pencils, Markers, and Paper

My students need a pair of electric pencil sharpeners, a class set of markers, and a large roll of white poster paper.

I teach science and social studies in an urban Louisiana middle school. It is a high poverty, inner city environment with students that are eager to learn, yet who struggle to find the most basic of supplies.

We are currently facing a crisis in the classroom: A lack of functioning electric pencil sharpeners in the school has left many a student staring wistfully at his work, lead-less pencil in hand. When the time has come for group poster work to enhance and enrich our social studies projects, we have encountered a major barrier: a critical lack of markers and poster paper.

The resources that my students need are a modest beginning to equipping each one of them for their classwork. A pair of electric sharpeners will guarantee that each student can have a pencil ready at all times, while a set of markers and a large roll of white poster paper will ensure that we can work in collaborative activities that will surely improve each student's learning.
