I teach 4th Grade in a very high-need community. Many of my students have had to relocate due to their homes going through foreclosure with their landlords. Our school is a diverse school with children that speak up to 10 different languages. Our school receives no extra funding so the students are receiving the bare necessities in the classroom.

My students need access to classroom libraries where each student can read the same book and learn about famous people from their own culture. Since most of my students are reading below grade level, having a class set of books that introduces the students to a famous cultural person will create more interest in reading.

Having a class set of these 2 titles will benefit my students because they will be able to read about positive role models from their own culture and improve their reading skills at the same time. My students will be able to use these stories to focus on reading skills such as Comprehension and Summaries.

By reading these books, my students will develop a new appreciation for people in their own culture who have had to strive for success amidst their own hardships. These books will serve as a reinforcement and encouragement for my own students not to give up during adverse times.
