180 Days of Poetry

My students need a video camera, 5 microphones, and 35 sets of headphones.

Our 5th grade inclusion class is extremely creative and this project is the outlet for their talents! If you are unfamiliar with the term inclusion, we are a blended class of general education students as well as special education students. Students with IEPs in our class range from learning difficulties to emotionally disturbed children.

We have discovered that by immersing our students in poetry everyday instead of just during poetry month, we can foster not only an appreciation and understanding of poetry but they themselves become poets. Poetry allows them to express emotions that children often have difficulty articulating.

Our students will use the Flip camera to create videos of themselves acting out their poetry or published poetry. They will also use the camera to film still art of their own creation that represents their poetry. The artwork will be broadcast with the podcasts of their poetry that they will create using the microphones. The headphones will allow students to edit their podcasts privately with the added benefit of not disturbing those around them. These podcasts will be posted on our class blog which students can then share with their families locally, across the country, and internationally.

Many of our students are newly immigrated to this country. Our poetry project helps them to acquire the English language in a safe and enjoyable way. They are able to express themselves not only with the power of language but through their art as well. They won't even realize that we are making them tech savvy along the way :-). With your help, we can empower these students. Thank you so very much for considering our project.
