Wacom To Animation!

My students need 10 Wacom Digital Drawing tablets in order to increase their artistic confidence. The tablets will also let them create animations, digital artwork, and graphic designs using technology that is an industry standard for careers they are interested in pursuing beyond high school.

Ms. R. South Atlanta High School
Atlanta, GA Grades 9-12

Welcome to the Digital Art room, where traditional art mediums meet the technological age. I teach Art Foundations, Computer Animation, and Traditional/Digital Arts at to 9-11 grade students in Georgia. Our school population consist of a high level of low income students that often struggle with having basic supplies of pencil and paper. I provide them with all of their needed supplies for the class, with a majority of it being purchased with my own money. However, I do this because students love learning how to express themselves using materials that they do not typically associate with art, such as the computer!! Currently we have 15 laptop computers that 30 students are paired up to share. The structure of the class allows half the students to create using traditional materials and the other half to create using the computer.

The issue we face is that the students learn how to use pencils, markers, and paintbrushes to create their traditional artworks. However, when they are creating on the computer, using Photoshop and Corel Painter, the medium for imputing their creative information is drastically different. They must use the touch pad of the keyboard or a mouse to draw, paint or manipulate a photograph. The students find using the touch pad or the mouse awkward and difficult. In addition, the use of the touch pad or a mouse does not allow the students to use the skills they had developed using the traditional mediums. This has proven to be a huge stumbling block in their creative process and has caused the students to become very frustrated with using the computer to create. Their frustration alarms me because so many of these students are interested in careers in animation, architecture, or graphic design and the current means of creating a product in these industries is via the computer.

I feel that the solution for my students frustrations would be the implementation of Bamboo Fun Wacom Tablets in the art class. These tablets are inexpensive digital tablets that allow the students to use digital pen and paper to draw, paint, and manipulate images on the computer in an intuitive manner. The Wacom tablets would allow the students to translate their traditional art skills to application on the computer using a tool that current artist, architects, animators, and graphic designers are currently using. I feel that my students will be better prepared for careers beyond high school if they had the ability to learn how to create using the Bamboo Wacom Tablets.

I feel that with your help, my students will be better prepared for careers beyond high school. They will have a clear understanding of how their traditional art skills translate to creating on the computer using a Wacom Tablet, which is an industry standard for animators, architects, graphic designers, and artists.
