Marching Drums Don't Float, And We Miss Mardi Gras!

My students need 2 bass drums, 2 snare drums, and a tom set, as ours were lost during Hurricane Katrina along with everything else in our classroom.

Here in the land of parades - especially Mardi Gras parades - marching percussion is a must for band programs. This is one more thing that Hurricane Katrina took away from my students. Imagine their pride as my students used to march down the street playing the Mardi Gras Mambo. This meant so much culturally, emotionally, and musically to my students. They were the "cool" kids for being able to go to parades and entertain people! We would go to nursing homes and elementary schools and have mini parades for those people, as well as perform in local parades and football games. All of that was lost in a classroom filled with bayou mud, snakes, and brackish water. I came back to my classroom after the hurricane as any veteran teacher would - wearing combat boots. I entered the room without permission because my building wasn't safe to enter. I looked around, killed a few snakes, and put down roofing shingles to walk on. I tried many times to salvage anything from that room. Sadly, not much was salvageable. Imagine the wood on the drums after sitting in water for a week. I would love to be able to restore a little normalcy to my students, their parents, and the community at large by being able to teach the joys of marching percussion to my students again. As most people know, the arts are usually the last area funded and the first cut. The percussion instruments that were lost will not be replaced through FEMA, insurance, or any other means. I cannot tell you exactly how this huge donation would help us to rebuild our spirits and feel more normal again. I can tell you that this donation would impact students, families, and communities for many years to come. Laissez Les Bon Temps Rouler!
