Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I have been a kindergarten teacher for the past 10 years. Everyday I am greeted by 20 wonderful, smiling faces. I feel so lucky to have a job that I love. My school population is very diverse and challenging. We are a Title One school with 83% of our student population qualifying for free and reduced lunch. Many of my students do not even come with a backpack or supplies. I usually spend a significant amount of my own money buying supplies for the entire year.

Over the last 5 years there has been so much emphasis put on test scores. Therefore, our students have been immersed in Language Arts and Mathematics. Don't get me wrong, these are very important subjects, but not every child excels in these areas. I feel that quite often science is overlooked. I am determined to expand my science curriculum and offer exciting items to explore in the science center. I was fortunate to have one of my science proposals funded earlier this year and I would like to add to the excitement! The science center is an area that is visited during free choice time. It hasn't been empty all year. I have actually had to create a waiting list for children who want a turn.

The children have enjoyed the color tubes and geode rocks thoroughly, but I would like to take it to the next level. The Explore and Discover Science Center is aligned with our grade level standards. It will allow a more in depth learning opportunity. The Feel and Discover Science Bags will encourage our second language learners to increase and develop their vocabulary skills. The Science Stamp set will support my kindergarteners who are already writing!

I would love to have these items to bring our science curriculum together for the remainder of the school year. Science is such an important area that is often pushed aside. I have made it my personal goal this year to enhance my science program and give these students more opportunities to explore with hands on experiences. I need your help to make this happen. Your help will ensure that my students will have the opportunity to experience hands on science. They will be able to explore independently and conduct investigations in the science center. Thank you for your support.
