I teach students from a very high poverty area of the city. I teach seventh grade at a school that is named after Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. My students are at an age where they feel their dreams are not only deferred but slowly being lost. Our school is a school that has been identified as a school in need of improvement in reading. It hard to bring about that improvement when it hard for the students to identify with stories in our reading book. My influence plays a big part in my students learning. I want to provide them with the best exposure to books and materials. How can I surround my students and immerse them into books by famous authors without having the books available to me? I want to fill their minds with books they can relate to. I would like to have these books available to my students at all times. I also would like for the students to read and discuss the books as a class. Reading books that are culture and gender relevant and age appropriate will help my students to improve. You can make a difference in instilling the love of reading in a seventh grade student that without a doubt will have a lasting effect on their lives. Please help my students grow to be successful life long learners by providing our classroom with culturally relevant books. My students need 30 books of each title: "Shooter" and "Monster" by Walter Dean Myers. A total of 60 books.
