Coming of Age: Interrupted

My students need 35 copies of the book "Sold" by Patricia McCormick.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

Our studies have taken us from fair Verona to Holden's New York to dangerous streets of L.A. ... and now to the brothels of India.

Through the pages of various works and examining their own lives, my ninth graders have approached the question, "What does it mean to come of age?" Our next unit explores stories where the coming of age process is interrupted.

We would love copies of the novel "Sold," which is a poetic and tragic account of a young girl from Nepal sold into the sex trade in India. The book is a National Book Award finalist and has been extremely popular in the Young Adult Literature crowd. Along with "Sold," we are going to read Ishmael Beah's novel "Long Way Gone" about child soldiers in Sierra Leone. Our projects along the way will include a research paper inquiring into different aspects of youth soldiers and prostitution. Then, we will take what we learn and come together in some form of activism, possibly writing letters or sharing our research with our school community.

Your help with ensure that my students, nearly all who are not reading on grade level, will have engaging texts that not only improve their literacy, but also expand their social consciousness and, hopefully, self understanding.
