Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

Learn the responsibilities of having a job in my classroom! I teach 2nd grade and part of our Social Studies curriculum is to understand the importance of roles in our community. The office items are used by students for classroom jobs, such as: teacher assistant, classroom managers, and supplies manager. I teach at a Title I school, where over 85% of the student body is at or below the poverty line. By giving the children these sort of duties in the classroom, it helps them feel effective in their role in our community.

My students face a lot of challenges when it comes to taking on responsibility in school and for their role in the community. Often times, they are faced with a parent or guardian that has not taken their responsibility for what is important, therefore, not modeling what accountability looks like. I saw first hand how these items made a difference. Also, all items I've had previously, have been destroyed in an electrical fire.

Having these items will empower the children and give them a sense of efficacy and normalism, especially after enduring the changes the fire has forced upon them. Also, the children will go back into their own homes and community and show that they can rise above what may be the status quo at home. The greatly needed items are: a computer desk for the teacher assistant, paper cutter, stapler, and other office supplies that will allow the students to perform their weekly jobs.

Donations such as these, I know, will be given by those I know understand that to secure the future, you must take action now. Also, such donations will allow these children to do more than staple some papers or attach a post-it, but to let them know they are making a difference and can do anything.
