This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

Chemistry galore: freezing a flask to a board, rekindling a glowing splint with oxygen, extracting silver, and much more! Hello! I am a first-year Teach for America teacher for 8th grade physical science at a Title 1 school in southern CA. I have about 180 students who posses a wide range of academic abilities. My students absolutely love hands-on experiments and demonstrations!

Unfortunately, the amount of time it takes my school district to deliver science supplies is at least a year, so the students I have this year will not be able to enjoy and learn from my planned chemistry demonstrations. I strongly feel that my first group of students deserves an equal opportunity to experience the wonder with chemistry as my future students will.

I have requested a collection of chemicals and science supplies that would demonstrate a variety of chemical reactions (endothermic, exothermic, metal reactivity, etc.) I wish to make my students further realize that chemistry and science occurs everywhere in their lives. If I can catch their attention through surprising demonstrations, then students will wonder, "What else is out there that I never knew?" and be inspired to discover more. I plan to demonstrate endothermic reactions by mixing two chemicals that can freeze water. I also plan to show periodic trends by reacting metals of the same family with acid. Another classic demonstration is producing oxygen that can rekindle a glowing splint. I would also extract silver crystals from solution and create a beautiful silver tree on a wire. These demonstrations would be timeless to the students. My students will carry these memories as they continue to learn science in high school and beyond.

Your help in funding this project would greatly enhance the learning experiences of my students. Children need to develop an interest in science in order to think critically about their surroundings and to develop inquiry skills. By piquing their curiosity through demonstrations, I would be able to expand their understanding of science and give them more opportunity to say, "Do you know what cool thing happened in science class today?" to their peers and families.
