Tigers that Survived a Fire

My students need copies of 14 various books, from Dr. Seuss classics to Junie B. Jones, in order to rebuild our classroom library.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My classroom is made of Tigers that have survived a Fire! I am a second grade teacher who has an awesome class that loves to read! Unfortunately, we recently lost our entire classroom due to an electrical fire. Through all the changes and emotions my kids endured, they did not "extinguish" their desire to read! I teach at a Title I school where over 85% of our children are at or below poverty, yet, these wonderful children have no titles labeling them when they walk into my classroom... except the title "Good Reader".

The childrens's obstacle, besides the fire's destruction to our school, is the access to a good book. Outside of what I provide in my room, not much is available to them, due to financial hardship, lack of parental involvement, or, the case often, parents have no guidance in encouraging reading in their children.

To jump over this hurdle, my children need the books that are at their level AND grab their attention. The books I've selected are books we use during independent reading, group reading, theme related curriculum, and an accelerator for writing.

Despite losses that my children may endure, in and out of the classroom, I know the donations provided will give a gift that will never go away...the gift to READ. These children are used to instability and dramatic changes in their lives, for donors to give them something that will rebuild what was stable in their lives, is more than anyone can ask for.
