The Discovery Program is unique in two ways. More than 50% of the students are English Language Learners and more than 30% are severely handicapped. General and special education teachers co-teach in this inclusive classroom and provide multi-modal experiences that totally immerse students into units of study. Children of all ability levels work cooperatively at hands-on learning centers designed so every child can be challenged and successful. The classroom is a beehive of activity in which academic success and the developing of understanding and acceptance are stressed equally. Providing the hands-on materials needed to bring language, academic and cooperative learning concepts to life for such a wide range of students is a constant challenge. The interactive language system and supporting materials requested in this project will accomplish these goals by providing activities and technology that will engage and benefit our ELL and special education students. The “English Language Learners” project is an excellent example of the adage: "I hear and I forget. I see and I remember. I do and I understand." By working together on the selected activities, we want our students to learn and reinforce language concepts and vocabulary while gaining an understanding and acceptance of individual interpersonal differences. This project will provide our students with a Radius Interactive player and the supporting CDs, cards and labeling materials needed to increase their vocabulary and language skills. Your support of this project will make it possible for 32 children ranging in abilities from severely handicapped through gifted, to be immersed in cooperative learning activities that will increase language acquisition and interpersonal relations.
