The Discovery Program fully includes severely handicapped K-3 students into a general classroom setting located at our local public school. General and special education teachers co-teach in the classroom and provide multi-modal experiences that totally immerse students into units of study. Children of all ability levels work cooperatively at hands-on learning centers designed so every child can be challenged and successful. The classroom is a beehive of activity in which academic success and the developing of understanding and acceptance are stressed equally. Providing the hands-on materials needed to bring academic concepts to life for such a wide range of students is a constant challenge. We want to provide materials and activities that will engage all of our students and promote cooperative learning experiences. Magnetic learning centers of all types provide wonderfully engaging opportunities. By selecting magnetic learning center activities that will teach and reinforce language arts, math and science objectives, we will provide our young students with kinesthetic learning opportunities that will lead to them meeting standards. The “Knowledge That Sticks” project is an excellent example of the adage: "I hear and I forget. I see and I remember. I do and I understand." By working together on the selected center activities, we want our students to learn and reinforce academic concepts while gaining an understanding and acceptance of individual interpersonal differences. This project will provide our students with a magnetic learning center library of activities that will truly help our students stick to tasks that include reading, counting, numeral recognition, patterning and sorting to name a few. Your support of this project will make it possible for 32 children ranging in abilities from severely handicapped through gifted to be immersed in cooperative learning activities that will increase academic knowledge and interpersonal relations. Thank you for helping to make this a reality.
