Step right up! So many books for the students to see and we are in need of a bookshelf to house them. I am a second grade teacher of a really amazing class in a Charter School in a small high-needs community in Indiana. My classroom is an exciting place for growth and exploration for 26 wonderful kids.

Our room is full of many wonderful books that my students love to listen to and are absolutely excited about. After reading a story or reading it aloud to the class, I place the book on my "Teacher's Favorites" shelf to encourage the students to reread it themselves. The shelf is actually a very small, cardboard, 3 shelf bookcase which has room for ONLY about 12 books to be displayed at one time. This section is my students’ favorite place to visit because these books are inviting, easily accessible, and easy to see. The obstacles we face are that the books on the shelves are far too often overlooked! The books are hard to see and even may seem uninviting. This often discourages them from picking through the piles of books that I am sure they would enjoy. Also, the students' varying interests are not being aided with the use of the current bookshelves. The topics and genres are mixed and without order and are in need of major reconstruction.

The story book "Read All About It" By Laura Bush would be a great introduction to our new display of books. Reading this book as our Monthly read aloud will rekindle the desire and excitement in many, to read and enjoy reading. The story is about a young boy who thought reading was a bore until one day the book his teacher read aloud, came alive. It tells of what amazing adventures can happen when a reader is drawn into the life of a character. The bookshelf I am requesting will allow my students to expand their interest in topics by making various books more inviting and available. This bookshelf allows books to be displayed in buckets with the genres neatly posted so that they are easy to see. The books face forward, making this bookshelf ideal for our class. This will make ALL books intriguing, eye-catching and easily accessible. Also, the kids will have a bird's eye view of the various topics of books we have in our class. This way, students with specific interest will have several books to choose from instead of selecting only from the "Teacher's Favorites".

I want to encourage my students to read about a whole world of things. They truly enjoy reading and I want to open up opportunities for them that many may not have in their homes. With your help in adding this to our reading center, my students will continue to love books, seek out new books, and therefore continue to grow as wonderful readers.
