Draw Me Mine

My students need a digital camera to share, 7 packs of charcoal with 12 sticks in each, and heavy white drawing paper (multiple sheets per child).

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

This is my first year teaching fourth grade; I have 25 students, all whom love art. I teach at a charter school where 96% of the students qualify for free and reduced lunch. The school is comprised of mostly Hispanic and African American Students. The focus of the charter school is science and math but we are currently building up our arts program with different alliances with neighborhood groups.

Every time I sit down to grade papers, there are drawings that cover the borders of the white lined paper. Students are always anxious for art time and constantly give me pictures of their drawings from home. I see the light in their eyes every time I use a diagram in math or a draw a picture in science. Art really helps them to solidify the content knowledge and I want to use art to inspire them in math, science, and language arts. Hopefully, this will make the students more eager in other content areas.

However, because of the current economic situation, many of our funds are being cut. Art time is mostly filled with coloring or cutting and pasting. My goal is that my students will understand that art can encompass a wide range of materials and experiences. Using the digital camera will allow my students to take photos of nature and use it to inspire them in their art. Having a digital camera will also allow me to capture my students final work and make a slide show or have an online photo album for the parents to keep. Charcoal is a very versatile material and will allow students to create art that has texture, shadowing, shape, and a 3D dimension. This will allow students to see that art is not just limited to coloring and markers. Students will be able to create art that mimics real life and use their hands to alter their piece of work. I can then use student art to connect to writing; having students write about their art will be much more eventful then just writing about their summer break. Using art to inspire students in different content areas is the main goal because we want our students to see the big picture and not just subjects in isolation.

Your help will make it possible for students to have access to materials they otherwise would not have the chance to experience. Students come to school to have a well rounded education but often times students, especially students in low income neighborhoods, are just drilled and drilled on basic facts. All students deserve a chance to have access to all subjects and resources. Many low income neighborhood schools do not have the funds to purchase materials and thus students do not get the chance to interact with new materials. Your donation will provide equity and equality to all students, or at least start to.
