Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

The band at my school is one of the few public middle school band programs left in the heart of the city, but it has grown by leaps and bounds since we started four short years ago. The energy and enthusiasm of my band students, now numbering around 150, has taken on a life of its own. We have become what may be the region's only inner-city public school marching band. Over the past few years I have sought to mobilize the band in order to increase performance opportunities and minimize the equipment and set-up required. Travel would be easier and the band could perform on a moment’s notice, important considerations for eager young musicians in the fast-paced and chaotic city. I turned to a marching style set-up to accomplish these goals and the students fell in love with the marching band music and tradition. They even asked me to teach them more discipline so they can look like the great band they are. The only thing the band lacks now is the all important drum line. A light marching snare drum that hooks to a carrier will allow more of the drummers to move and play simultaneously with no set-up or hauling of heavy equipment. With your help the school’s marching band will be completely mobile, with new possibilities to showcase their talent, pride and hard work. With the mobilized band, parades, outdoor festivals, and a “tour” of the region's elementary schools will spread the joys of learning music. More performances will also lead to greater visibility in the community and more inspiration for young students to study music and join their school band.
