Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

Hi there! How in the world are you? I am a peppy and optimistic 7th grade teacher who serves in an urban K-8 school in the Bay State of Massachusetts! We reside in a close-knit community of mostly South American immigrants which, unfortunately, is forced to contend with the realities of crime and gang infestation. Our kids are approached to join these gangs as early as 11 years old and as a community, we actively combat this by making strong connections with our students and their families, and by giving them the encouragement, education, and resources they need to overcome these obstacles and become successful.

Last year was my first year at this school and I absolutely fell in love with these students. Unfortunately, our school budget does not allow for an LCD projector, but nevertheless, I decided that 7th grade is a ripe enough age where students should begin to be exposed to college bound opportunities and skills that they will need. One of the main skills I am trying to teach them is research skills. The families of our students, some of which cannot even read, work so, so hard and strive to give their children (as any parent would) the best things they can. Many of our students have some form of a computer at home, and know how to use it. But what do most of these students use it for? MySpace! MySpace! MySpace! I feel it is my mission in life to show my students that the Internet is a valuable resource that can be used to learn and write about all sorts of wonderful things! As of now, when I am trying to teach them about research skills via using the Internet, I find myself mostly drawing pictures of web windows and web address bars to try to explain what I'm talking about, and that is both time consuming, and not good enough-my students deserve better.

Well, I hope you're starting to see the connection here. It's simple. I believe that my students should be taught these valuable research skills with the real-deal, not just my cheap imitations in the form of rather pathetic drawings on the board. In addition, being that my students are, or at one time were, English Language Learners, they really need visuals to make connections. My being able to effectively and accurately teach these skills is so important because my students will be learning something that they will take with them and apply throughout their academic careers and beyond. A lot of these students really believe that the Internet's sole purpose in life is to bring them MySpace and instant messaging. I am so eager and excited about showing them how to unlock other doors of learning that the Internet has to offer.

These students are truly remarkable. They have shown such a keen interest in learning thus far, and I want to show and teach them, especially in this technological driven age, the research skills that they need to further drive their learning. With your help, we will have taken another leap in ensuring that our children have all the advantages that they are entitled to in receiving the highest quality of education possible. We really need your help to make this happen. Please assist us in further empowering our students by giving them these important skills that will certainly help them to succeed. Thank you!
