Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

Full of Potential I teach 7th grade English at Vista middle school. We are a title one school and all students receive a free lunch at Vista. Vista Middle School is located in a very rough neighborhood. There is a lot of crime and many gangs that affect the lives of these students. They are poor and disadvantaged, but they have much to say.

Because of the gang violence that surrounds our school, our students feel that they have no voice. Our school is a beacon of hope in this neighborhood, and it is time to highlight the positive message that our school is sending out to this community. Additionally, students need to learn about advancing technology in order to be competitive in this modern world. For all these reasons, we want to establish a weekly news program created by and for the amazing students at Vista Middle School. This news program will be broadcast via closed circuit television into all the classrooms at school. Students will write, film, and edit this news program and it will highlight the successes of Vista Middle School. It will also offer inspiring stories and strategies that will help students attain their goals.

We need 4 digital video cameras to give our students a voice and to teach them about technology that will motivate students to express themselves and to compete in a modern world. They need to know that they have choices in this world and that they can make a difference in their community. We want them to understand that there are better ways to be recognized than with graffiti.

Our student population is often overlooked. Please allow our students to be seen and heard and to understand the possibilities of their futures.
