Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

This year five outstanding, Deaf and Hard of Hearing students from my school have been chosen to represent their school at the Mid-Atlantic/At Large Region Academic Bowl Competition sponsored by Gallaudet University and hosted by the Model Secondary School for the Deaf in Washington D.C. this March. The Academic Bowl provides a remarkable number of unique opportunities for Deaf and Hard of Hearing students to demonstrate their academic prowess in their own language (American Sign Language), to meet other Deaf and Hard of Hearing students from around their region and to see, meet, and develop relationships with role models, and be considered for college scholarships and grants. Everything is in place: the opportunity, the motivation, the excitement, the bright students and their dedicated teachers. What’s missing is the money to get us there. Due to our troubling economy, public school funding has been cut and school trips were one of the first on the chopping block. “For want of a nail the shoe was lost, for want of a shoe the horse was lost, for want of a horse the knight was lost, for want of a knight the battle was lost. So it was a kingdom was lost – all for want of a nail.” JLA: The Nail, (DC Comics, 1998) For the past four years selected students have had the opportunity to attend the Academic Bowl with the help of generous grants, local sponsors and of course the support of our school. Every year our students come back inspired and motivated to do even better academically. Three of our students in the past were recognized for their achievement at the Academic Bowl and were offered college scholarships by the sponsoring university. The event is a critical motivator for our students not only academically, but socially. It allows them to interact with the Deaf community, which provides them with a greater sense of self esteem and identity. The students have been working hard as a team during and after school to prepare for this competition but this year they must also find ways to raise money for transportation. However, the planning and time involved conflicts with their academic schedule and their time to prepare as a team. The students revel at the opportunity for an academic challenge and begin preparing months before the competition. The team will test their knowledge in a question and answer game of quick recall and general knowledge on a wide variety of subjects that include Current Events; Deaf Studies; the Arts; Geography; History and Government; Language and Literature; Mathematics; Popular Culture, Leisure, Sports; and Science and Technology. Gallaudet University is preparing to hold the 2009 Academic Bowl and now, more than ever, our students are eager to participate—to share in the spirit of camaraderie and to continue to strive toward academic excellence in this uniquely Deaf environment. In order to attend, I am requesting money to cover the cost of transportation from New York to Washington, D.C. With this money, my students will have at least one opportunity this school year to participate in a linguistically unconstrained environment with peers from similar backgrounds, build self-esteem and develop lifelong friendships with peers and professionals from around the country. All I am asking for is one nail. Please don’t leave us unhinged.
